WHY SKIRTING BOARDS.

Skirting boards or baseboards or as Italians like to call it biscotti i.e., where the broom touches are sheets of different lengths and sizes used to cover or decorate the edges where the wall meets the floor or the roof. PVC skirting boards are commonly seen in European houses rather than eastern ones and are considered a must-have nowadays.

back in the 1800s is when these boards were introduced by the Victorian era as a sign of wealth and prosperity. being so expensive other people were unable to buy or use those to adorn their houses. They were introduced to primarily hide the paint job or the plaster slurry used that time to cover the stone walls, slurry being a thick or thin paste depending on money and quality of who offered the service and to whom it was offered. skirting boards were also used to stop the cold from entering and to prevent the heat from escaping from the unfilled holes that were possible to be formed due to low-quality handicrafts. Victorians’ era houses of the elite were huge with big walls. They introduced skirting boards of more than 30 plus centimeters to make the people understand the depth of their rooms and the places where there was skirting were mostly used for functions or were kept on show. stones and wood used to be the material of choice back in the day, with ornate carvings, patterns, and grooves using them as a means of decoration and aesthetically pleasing. History says that these might have been introduced to prevent the damage to the walls caused by the spurs of the gentleman of that time or by moving big pieces of furniture in and out as the time may have required to do so. The skirtings of larger sizes can still be viewed as houses of old Victorian households.

Even though today simpler designs have become the norm, skirting boards remain a top feature at homes around the world. It's their functionality and design versatility that make them essential. Nowadays these can be seen in almost every house as with industrialization came man-made materials such as MDF and easy to cut, carve and install in every corner of the house. As the houses are smaller now the heights of the boards have changed such as is the case with the designs, newer generation tends to lean towards minimalism so the favored skirting boards are now ad as rather small because installing 30 plus centimeters would look gaudy and make the house look smaller.

Skirting boards may be a thing of the past but are very much functional and will not remain just a past reminder of things.
